The hawthorn tree is a heady combination of beauty and danger: exquisite blooms and red, yellow or black berries fiercely protected by lichen-encrusted thorns. 

The thorns fascinate me most. 

The images you see here were fashioned from thorns pruned from a friend’s tree and sorted into piles of similar size.  I imagined them as logs stacked in a boom floating down a river.
