Pekiwke ahpi – Come Visit Sometime

Pekiwke ahpi – Come Visit Sometime, a portrait of place, is another work that moves beyond my immediate family roots. It depicts the diverse flora and fauna of the boreal forest ecosystem of the Lac La Biche region where Warren Cardinal-McTeague grew up.

Cardinal-McTeague is an Assistant Professor at UBC and Canada Research Chair in Indigenous Peoples, Governance and Environmental Relations. Since 2021, Warren and I have collaborated on various projects exploring the relationship between contemporary Indigenous art and science.

According to Cardinal-McTeague, “My attachment to Lac La Biche is best understood as a connection to place. It includes the land, but also the people, communities, and the many memories we created together through the seasons.
